Available by invitation only, members, ages 8-17, will be able to join the Barn Rats 4-H club. Riders must have a positive attitude, be teachable, and willing to do their best. Riders do not have to have much riding experience, but must be ready to commit to getting dirty, working hard, and learning lots while having fun.
Barn Rats will be offered weekly individual riding lessons during an evening or weekend time slot as best arranged to fit the client and the instructor. Lesson topics will be personalized to best meet the riders goals and riding level.
Riders will be offered one structured unmounted lesson each month to cover learning the basics of horsemanship. Topics will include nutrition, anatomy, diseases, unsoundnesses, conformation, and other horse science topics. There may be homework or additional reading assigned as part of the unmounted lessons.
Riders will be given opportunities to learn in a hands-on manner, also. They will be invited to participate in grooming and bathing, preparing and giving feed, attending farrier and veterinary appointments, and providing first aid when necessary. Riders will be expected to spend time cleaning stalls and tack as part of their learning and care of the horse. Each member will receive a binder called the Horse Handbook, with multiple resources for learning the basics to advanced horsemanship.
Kelley Kids Ranch Riders will be able to represent Kelley Kids Ranch in the local and regional equine community by attending trail rides, horse shows and clinics to observe, learn, and compete. Kelley Kids Ranch staff will coach, support, and supervise riders at shows and events when they are ready to compete. Additional entry fees, transportation and stabling costs, and showing equipment will be the responsiblitity of the rider and family.
Joining 4-H is free, but to participate in the lesson program, with or without using a Kelley Kids Ranch horse, there is a monthly fee. Barn Rats membership costs $150 (using a KKR horse) each month for mounted lessons weekly and a 3 hour drop-in riding time from 3-5pm on the rider's assigned day of the week and additional equine opportunities, or $125 if using your own horse. Riders will be part of a group that rides together, learns together, cares for their animals, and prepares for competition with supervision, support, and safety. Riders will also receive a KKR t-shirt, tack cleaning kit, and other equine supplies.
